According to the patent which was filed in March 2015, Apple is desperately looking into the technology which could allow you to use your smartphone without touching it. This technology may use photodiodes in your screen and other proximity sensing hardware to catch hovering gestures.
The sensors inside the display would work in connection with proximity sensors around the device as well as to combine and be able to tell when a finger or palm is hovering over the screen.
The probability with this technology are impressive. It will let you control your screen, offer a new input for gaming purpose and it would likely mean the device can mislay the IR proximity sensor which it uses to detect your head while attending a phone call.
